Prof. Samuel Antwi Oppong is an enthusiastic physician-scientist deeply committed to advancing women's health issues in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa through impactful service and research. He is a consultant obstetrician Gynaecologist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and associate professor at University of Ghana Medical School. Notably, he has made pioneering contributions by establishing the first multi-disciplinary sickle cell disease (SCD) obstetric care and research team in Africa in 2015. Currently, he serves as the director of the largest SCD-Obstetric care program in Africa, overseeing operations across five sites in Ghana and managing approximately 600 pregnant women with SCD annually.
Prof. Oppong's work includes describing risk factors for maternal death and investigating the epidemiology of major complications such as acute pain, acute chest syndrome, and venous thromboembolism in pregnant women with SCD. He has also dedicated efforts to improving the care of women with complicated pregnancies and labour, particularly those with hypertensive disorders. Recently completing a significant international multi-center observational study, Dr. Oppong aimed to identify intrapartum risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes in low-middle-income countries.
Demonstrating a commitment to generating high-quality evidence, Dr. Oppong is currently focused on therapeutic trials and management interventions to address critical maternal health problems such as postpartum hemorrhage and preeclampsia. Formerly serving as the Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ghana, he remains an active member of the Africa Sickle Cell Disease Research Network. Dr. Oppong's impactful research has garnered support from prestigious institutions like the NIH and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Prof. Oppong obtained his medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School and a Master in Public Health degree from the School of Public Health, University of Ghana.
