Udofia, Emilia Asuquo (MBBS, FWACP, FGCPS, MSc, PhD)

Professor Emilia Asuquo Udofia has 20 years of medical practice and nearly 17 years of research experience. Her research contributions span various areas, including Infectious diseases (HIV & AIDS, TB), reproductive health, environmental health (housing, medical waste management, health risks & oil pollution), non-communicable diseases, and women’s health.

Professor Udofia is an Associate Professor at the Department of Community Health, University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS). She imparts knowledge in Qualitative Methods and Scientific Writing for the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS). As a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (Community Health), she serves as the Chairperson, Faculty of Community Health – Ghana Chapter, and Secretary of the Faculty Board, Community Health. She is also a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Secretary of the Faculty Board, Public Health. 

Prior to her tenure at the University of Ghana, Professor Udofia served as a Clinical Advisor and State Coordinator for the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP-NG) in Nigeria. Her responsibilities included administrative oversight, clinical mentoring, networking with community-based organizations, and health systems strengthening in HIV & AIDS Care and Treatment. Her expertise also contributed to the Fevers Unit at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana.

Beyond her academic commitments, Professor Udofia teaches undergraduate and graduate entry medical students Environmental Health. She extends her expertise to other disciplines in Community Health, covering Basic Statistics, Research Methods, and Neglected Tropical Diseases. Currently, she offers lectures on Occupational Psychology at the University of Ghana School of Public Health and supervises MPH students’ research in two departments. Engaged in a NIHR Global Health Research Group Project on Digital Diagnostics for African Health Systems, she serves as a Deputy Team Lead in the Community Engagement and Involvement Work Package, supervising a PhD student.

She earned her medical degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria, and holds a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. She completed her PhD in Public Health at the University of Ghana, specializing in Environmental Health, focusing on medical waste management from a community perspective. Recognized for her excellence, Professor Udofia received the Best Part II candidate in Public Health award from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. She is also a University of Michigan African Presidential Scholar participating in a capacity-building/mentoring program for university faculty.
