Professor Alfred Edwin Yawson has over two decades of medical practice and research experience in healthcare, academia, and research. As a physician, public health practitioner, academic, and researcher, he has made significant contributions to health care provision, research, and policy development, as well as training and mentoring of students.
Professor Yawson's research interests focus on health systems, ageing, chronic non-communicable diseases, HIV and AIDS, health policy, planning, and financing. His extensive research background includes being the principal investigator on the WHO World Health Survey Plus (WHS+) in Ghana and a member of the WHO Team for the Multinational Study on AGEing and Adult Health (SAGE).
Professor Yawson has actively contributed to national and international research projects and health care policy, working in various capacities in Ghana and other West African countries. His leadership in health systems planning and budgeting for the Ghana Health Service, as the lead national facilitator for the Bottleneck Analysis Approach. He has also led initiatives such as the development of Ghana's Full Portfolio Plan Application for GAVI, securing a grant for the immunization program for the period 2020-2024.
In addition to his academic and research roles, Professor Yawson has provided services for international organizations such as the World Bank, Global Financing Facility, Global Fund, WHO, UNICEF, USAID, JICA, GIZ, PATH, and FHI 360. He is currently the lead national consultant for the World Bank’s Service Delivery Indicator Survey (SDI) for the Ghana Health Service.
Professor Yawson obtained his medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School. He also holds an MSc in Health Policy, Planning, and Financing from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a Diploma in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of the University of London. He is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (Community Health) and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (Public Health). He is Professor of Community Health and Dean at the University of Ghana Medical School and a honorary Associate Professor of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK.
His commitment to knowledge transfer is evident in his active involvement in training and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Professor Yawson has supervised over 40 master's and Ph.D. level students, as well as over 140 medical students. His over 155 scholarly articles have significantly contributed to bridging gaps in health policy and research.
