Per Kallestrup is a Professor of Family Medicine and Global Health and the founding Co-Director of Center for Global Health at Aarhus University, where his research activities and portfolio focus on strengthening Primary Health Care in low- and middle-income countries.
The main guiding principles of his research involve:
- Developing and testing models for integrated, comprehensive, community-oriented care delivered through a Primary Health Care team of locally available health professionals and volunteers.
- Applying sound scientific principles to allow scrutiny of carefully designed and contextually and culturally adapted interventions targeting otherwise underserved populations.
- Placing strong emphasis on poverty-orientation, community participation and local ownership, sustainability of tested interventions and linkage to the local, regional and national health system with the aim of potential scale-up of successful outcomes.
In addition to these tasks, he is President of the Danish Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Alliance and operational research advisor and member of the research committee of the East African NCD Alliance, the initiator and Chairman of “Partners in Practice – International Development Programme of the Danish College of General Practitioners”, and member of the Consortium Board of Primafamed – “Primary Care and Family Medicine Education Network.”
