The Africa–Europe Cluster of Research Excellence on Multimorbidity (AMCoRE) congratulates its Academic Co-Lead, Professor Tivani Mashamba-Thompson, on her appointment as Chairperson of South Africa’s National Health Research Committee (NHRC) for the 2026–2029 term.

This Ministerial appointment recognises her contributions to diagnostics research, health innovation, research governance and health systems strengthening. The NHRC advises the Minister of Health on national health research priorities and supports aligning research with the country’s priority health needs.

Prof Mashamba-Thompson previously served as Vice-Chairperson of the Committee. Her appointment builds on her leadership in advancing research that connects scientific evidence, policy, innovation and healthcare delivery.

At the University of Pretoria, she is the Founding Director of the Centre for Development and Implementation of Point-of-Care Diagnostics (CPOC-Dx) and an Academic Co-Lead of AMCoRE, an African Union–European Union research collaboration connecting African and European institutions to address the growing challenge of multimorbidity.

Her appointment highlights the importance of research leadership in shaping health priorities, informing policy and strengthening health systems. These priorities also align with AMCoRE’s commitment to advancing collaborative research that informs evidence-based policy and improves health outcomes across Africa and Europe.

AMCoRE warmly congratulates Prof Mashamba-Thompson on this significant appointment and wishes her every success in leading South Africa’s national health research agenda for the 2026–2029 term.
