George Obeng Adjei (MD, PhD, PGDip., FCP, FGA)

George Obeng Adjei is a professor of paediatric clinical pharmacology and Director of the Centre for Tropical Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Ghana Medical School. He is a translational physician scientist with expertise and over 25 years' experience in medical practice and clinical research. He previoulsy served as the Director of Research, University of Ghana, Office of Research, Innovation and Development. 

His research has focused on clinical trials and interventions and the clinical pharmacology (pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacogenomics) of antimalarial drugs, evolution of antimicrobial drug resistance, pathogenesis of severe malaria in children, and interactions between communicable and non-communicable diseases. His current research focuses on trials of interventions for sickle cell disease and diabetes and exploring precision medicine approaches in diagnostics and therapeutics of diseases of public health importance in resource-challenged settings. 

Prof. Obeng Adjei has a keen interest in research ethics. He serves on several ethics boards. He chairs the Scientific and Technical Committee of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Institutional Review Board and the Ethics Committee of the Radiological and Medical Research Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. He has expertise and interest in intellectual property and technology transfer services. He has served as ad-hoc peer reviewer for several local and international journals. He is a member of several professional associations including, European Society of Developmental, Perinatal and Paediatric Pharmacology (ESDPPP) and the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR). He has consulted for national and international agencies, and he plays an active role in research networks. He has been principal investigator of multi-year research projects. He is keenly involved in teaching, training and mentorship of the next generation of practitioners, scientists and researchers. 

Prof. Obeng Adjei obtained his medical degree from the Medical University of Gdansk, Poland. He holds a postgraduate diploma in research methodology from the Institute for Research and Development, Charlottenlund, Denmark, and PhD from University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He had post-doctoral fellowship training in affiliation with the Centre for Translational Medicine and Parasitology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is an elected Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. In 2019, he was elected a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.
