Dey, Dzifa (MBChB, MSc, MSc, FRCP, FWACP, FGCPS)

Dr. Dey is a senior specialist physician rheumatologist who is dedicated to advancing rheumatology in Ghana. She has played a pioneering role in establishing the first clinic in the field of rheumatology in Ghana. Her research, primarily focusing on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), delves into predictors, risk factors, and outcomes, particularly emphasising cognitive function and cardiovascular risks. She is passionate about preventive measures, advocating for early disease recognition and improved outcomes, aligning seamlessly with her strong interest in public health interventions and education.

In her role as Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-PI on numerous grants, Dzifa Dey has been instrumental in projects such as the development and validation of an epigenetic signature in Lupus Nephritis. Her overarching goal is to reduce disease severity and enhance outcomes through rigorous research.

Dr Dey has been a clinician, educator and training coordinator who has been involved in training and mentoring over 200 residents in internal medicine and rheumatology in Ghana, West Africa and Rwanda; she is keenly involved in the training of medical students at the University of Ghana and other medical schools across Ghana.

She is a member of the Ethics and Protocol Review Committee of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana. She serves on various committees of various institutions and as a peer reviewer for many local and international journals.

Dr. Dey obtained her medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School and an MSc in Rheumatology (with distinction) from Kings College, London, UK. She also holds an MSc in Medical Education from the University of New South Wales, UK. She is a fellow of the West African College of Physicians and the Ghana and Royal College of Physicians, UK. Dr. Dey has also received honours and positions, including the following:

  • Best Paediatric Rheumatologist of the Year, Pediatric Excellence Awards-Ghana (2022)
  • 1st Distinguished International Rheumatologist Award, American College of Rheumatology (2021)
  • Top Ten Finalist: MTN Heroes of Change 2018, Health Category 

 

She is the president of the African League of Associations of Rheumatology, AFLAR and Ghana Rheumatology Society. She is also a member of the Ghana Medical Association, Ghana Society of Internal Medicine and American College of Rheumatology
